SUPPORTING THE PRESERVATION OF LOCAL COASTLINE MANGROVE

The LEAF mangrove preservation initiative not only aids in the conservation of vital ecosystems but also empowers the local community by creating job opportunities and raising awareness about environmental stewardship. LEAF's efforts in the Watamu area stand as a beacon of hope and a model for sustainable ecological restoration. By involving community members in the planting and maintenance of the mangroves, this project fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment.

Furthermore, the benefits of mangrove restoration extend beyond the local community. The increase in carbon sequestration contributes to global climate change mitigation efforts, making this project a significant step towards a greener planet. The restored mangroves will also enhance coastal resilience, protecting infrastructure and livelihoods from the increasing threats posed by climate change.

We invite everyone to join us in supporting LEAF’s mission. Every booking at Kasa Tatu Cottages translates into a tangible financial contribution to the preservation of these crucial habitats as we will donate  to LEAF for each and every booking. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the environment and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

HARVESTING THE LOCAL RAINS

Each cottage is equipped with a 40,000-litre underground fresh water tank filled from rainwater, ensuring a reliable source of water throughout the year.

HARVESTING THE POWER OF THE SUN

For those seeking a blend of sustainable living and modern convenience, Kasa Tatu Cottages offer an exceptional experience.

The cottages are powered by a state-of-the-art Chloride Exide 50 panel hybrid solar system. By combining solar panels with battery storage technology and grid connectivity you can enjoy uninterrupted power supply throughout your stay. Batteries store excess solar energy generated during peak sunlight hours for use during the evening/night. This highly advanced system intelligently manages energy usage, optimizing the use of solar power when available and seamlessly switching to battery or grid power when needed. This versatility ensures reliable and continuous power supply around the clock.

Each Cottage also has a solar water heater for the provision of warm water as needed.

Alongside the solar system an on-site generator provides emergency power.

Please note the air-conditioning units are NOT supported by this system due to their very high energy use : power for these comes via the local energy supplier (KPLC) and this supply can be intermittent.
