What to Do: Explore the Natural Wonders

From snorkelling and diving in the crystal-clear waters to relaxing on the sandy beaches, Watamu offers a range of activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Set off on a Mida Creek cruise, visit the Bio-Ken Snake Park, the fascinating Kipepeo Butterly project or support local sea turtle conservation efforts by visiting the nearby Local Ocean Conservation (LOC) Centre .

Enjoy an unforgettable opportunity to see whales on their annual migration (from about mid-June to mid-October) and the Pacific Bottlenose & Indian Ocean Humpack dolphins (from about late October/early November to mid-April).

The nearby ruins of Gedi are nearby and well worth a visit. Surrounded by a remnant coastal forest, away from the coastline, the abandoned city of Gedi was one of the most important Swahili cities on the East African coast from the 10th to 17th centuries. During this period, it was part of a complex and international network of trade and cultural exchanges that crossed the Indian Ocean, linking African coastal centres with Persia and other areas.

A fun day out  to Stage Adventure Park is 40 minutes away. The park features turrets with Tibetan bridges, a 600 metre zipline and a breathtaking view. Guided bike tours can be organised in the savannah passing through the villages up to the Galana River promontory.

Or, why not explore nearby Tsavo East Game Park and marvel at Kenya’s magnificent wildlife. Tsavo East National Park offers great wildlife viewing in pristine wilderness. Four of the Big Five are here (no rhino). Elephants are common and their red dust coating makes them stand out against the arid environment. Of the big cats, lions are most easily spotted, but cheetahs are also possible out on the plains.

With its pristine beaches, rich biodiversity, wide range of tours and activities and a great choice of local restaurants Watamu is a paradise waiting to be explored.
